About this tool

Turns your text into a SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512 hash. A hash always yields the same value for the same input and cannot be reversed back to the original, which makes it useful for checking whether content has changed. It is computed on your device using the browser's built-in crypto.

When to use it

  • —Comparing a downloaded file against the checksum its publisher lists to spot corruption
  • —Confirming that two copies of the same document really are identical
  • —Seeing hash length and output differ across algorithms while learning how hashing works

Good to know

  • —SHA-1 has real-world collisions, where two different inputs produce the same value, so it is not recommended for security. Prefer SHA-256 or stronger for anything new.
  • —Hashing is not encryption. It cannot be reversed, but common passwords can be looked up in precomputed tables, so never store passwords as a bare hash.
  • —A single differing space or line break changes the result completely.
