About this tool
Extracts a PDF's text and reads it aloud with the browser's built-in voice. You can take in a document without looking at the screen, and since no external service is involved, the document stays put and there is no cost.
When to use it
- —Listening to a long report while travelling or doing something else
- —Taking in a document by ear when your eyes are tired
- —Hearing your own writing read back to catch awkward sentences
Good to know
- —Scanned image PDFs contain no text and cannot be read; run OCR first.
- —Documents dense with tables or footnotes can be read out of order and become hard to follow.
- —Available voices are limited to those installed on your device, and numbers, abbreviations, and proper nouns are sometimes misread.
